The David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship and AUPHA are pleased to announce that Leif H. Brierley, Boston University, and K.T. Kramer, Tulane University, are the 2014-2015 Winston Health Policy Fellowship Recipients.

The Winston Fellowship offers a twelve-month post-graduate experience in Washington, D.C. to students from AUPHA Full Graduate Member universities. Through systematic exposure to organizations, association and coalitions in the private sector, as well as policy development centers in Congress and the Administration, the program offers Fellows unparalleled opportunities to expand their knowledge of the political system and how health policy is shaped.  Three months of orientation visits to key policy development centers in Washington and surrounding areas are followed by a nine-month placement that allows each Fellow to explore current health policy issues in depth while gaining invaluable, firsthand experience in policy making.  The selection, as in past years, was extremely competitive, with 48 applicants and 5 individuals selected for interviews.

K.T. Kramer currently attends Tulane University and will graduate in May of 2014 with joint JD and MHA degrees.  She has experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Turkmenistan, has interned with the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.  She is currently a research associate for Professor Dr. Hugh W. Long, MBA, PhD, JD, working on a variety of projects including the wholesaling pricing of pharmaceuticals under state Medicaid plans.

According to K.T., "The Winston Health Policy Fellowship provides such an amazing opportunity to learn from and engage with the individuals and organizations at the forefront of national health policy.  I wish I didn’t have to wait to graduate in order to begin.”

Leif Brierley is pursuing a Master of Public Health degree at Boston University, where he received his undergraduate degree in biology and psychology.  He will receive his MPH in May of 2014.  His work experience at the Massachusetts Medical Society includes experience as both a Health Policy Analyst and as a Health Policy Intern. Brierley was also one of ten individuals awarded a David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarship in May of 2013.

"The Winston Health Policy Fellowship provides a unique opportunity to learn from and engage with the nation’s health policy leaders. I am incredibly honored and excited to experience everything the Fellowship has to offer during this dynamic time for national health policy,” Leif stated.

Congratulations to both K.T. and Leif on their achievement.
