Nearly 350 members headed to the Lone Star State and AUPHA’s 2014 Annual Meeting in San Antonio last month.  The week started off with a win by the Spurs and only got better from there.  The meeting formally opened on Wednesday with Pattullo Lecturer David Rubenstein, MHA, FACHE, US Army Retired Major General, who shared how to integrate personal mission, vision, and values into the new healthcare management leader’s toolkit.

The Annual Business Meeting followed, where new Board members Gina Cronin, MHA, Cleveland Clinic; Carol Molinari, PhD, University of Baltimore; and Carolyn (Cindy) Watts, PhD, Virginia Commonwealth University, were announced.  Congratulations to the newest members of the AUPHA Board.

Thursday’s program began with a General Session exploring better approaches to learning and career development opportunities for future healthcare leaders.  Thursday was also a day of celebration, a day to honor winners including Janet Reagan, PhD, California State University, Northridge; and Holly Jarman, PhD, University of Michigan, as recipients of The Gary L. Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership and The John D. Thompson Prize for Young Investigators, respectively. Forty-six poster presentations were held and the winners selected were #1 – Patients’ Evolving Perspective on the Use of Electronic Records in Physicians’ Offices: Amir Khaliq, University of Oklahoma and Ari Mwachofi, East Carolina University; #2 – A Survey of Massive Open Online Courses in Health Administration: Bernardo Ramirez, University of Central Florida; Cherie Ramirez, Harvard Global Institute; and William Aaronson, Temple University; and #3 – Deciding the Best Way to Produce a Healthcare Management Program:  Using Culinary DNA Blending to Create a Masterpiece MHA/MBA Program: Chuck Wainright, Stan York, and Joe Alexander, Belmont University.

Later that evening, attendees honored the 2014 William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research winner, Stuart Altman, PhD, Brandeis University.

The meeting drew to a close on Friday, with well-attended Graduate and Undergraduate Faculty Town Hall meetings, which provided an opportunity for attendees to air their concerns and share their suggestions for the year ahead.  Regina Herzlinger, PhD, Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and this year’s Studer Group Forum Speaker, shared her views on innovation as related to healthcare. Lucky winners of the Studer Raffle were Stonehill College and Saint Louis University.

The Annual Meeting post-conference evaluations were overwhelmingly positive about the meeting content and networking opportunities that the San Antonio meeting offered.
If you weren’t able to attend the meeting, or missed a session, you may locate presentations on the Network here.

We hope to see you at the 2015 Annual Meeting next June in Miami!
